The proper use of
Custom Colors
Sign systems that live in today’s warm welcoming hospitality
environments must beautifully complement the interior finishes. Many times an amebic organization lives in
this warm, welcoming environment – where change is a constant – hospitals and
medical centers are good examples. This
puts a lot of pressure on a sign system to keep up. Accurate
wayfinding is one issue but color is another.
Many designers, in an effort to maximize how well the sign system
complements the colors in a décor, will specify custom colors from paint
company palettes or Pantone color charts.
The result is generally a beautiful sign system – to begin with. In a rapidly changing environment, however,
this can be a detriment. Modular
directional signage, for instance, generally has adjacent inserts with a
destination area on each insert or slat. It’s virtually impossible, over the
life of the sign system, to match the custom paint color exactly the same. You can verify this yourself by walking into
almost any facility that’s been fitted with this solution. What’s the answer? Create a beautiful sign with custom colors
in the modular panels that don’t change with high frequency and use only
standard colors and materials in frequently changing areas where inserts are
lined up next to each other.
